Feeling Cramped? Maximize Your Dorm Room Space
7/13/2011 - by Kim Weatherstone

So you’re finally in college and you are trying to decide how to divide up an already small room with a complete stranger, here are some design tips on optimizing your dorm space with your roommate.

Since the dorm rooms are so small, space is very precious; one way to free up some of that space is by bunking your beds. Before bunking them though talk to your roommate and make sure they are comfortable with this. By bunking the beds you can free up a lot of space that would have been taken up by two individual beds. Also by bunking beds you allow yourself the option of having a futon, which can give your room a more homely feel to it.

However, if you or your roommate prefer the little privacy you already have then there are other ways to try and optimize your dorm space. In each dorm room, you have your standard twin size bed, drawers, and a desk with a chair. So to make the most out of your side of the room get bed risers and lift your bed up a little that way you can put your drawers under your bed. Try some storage bins to hold your extra clothes and the shoes that wouldn’t all fit in your closet.

Another easy way to free up some space is by using storage bins that slide under your bed. Back of the door organizers are perfect because they provide a place to put your coats and scarf’s in the winter or purses. A caddy or bucket is perfect for storing your toiletries especially if you have to use a community bathroom and have to travel back and forth.
