College Style: Dressing For Your Summer Internship
6/3/2011 - by Savannah Cyree

First day jitters can always be rough. New job? New internship? New all of the above? You are already concerned about performance without having to be worried about what you are wearing. Today I’m going to give you a few do’s and don’ts in the wardrobe department for that new job/internship so you can be more focused on your words and not your wardrobe.
Now, when it comes to what to wear the little details can be the hardest ones. First on the
do not do list: wear any shoe with a thong on it. As silly as it seems, it is a gray area. Often, the nicer sandals that we wear today don’t always make the high class cut for everyone. Most write off the “anything with a thong on it” shoe as not worth of the work place. By avoiding it you can skip the worry of how your current employer feels that first day. In regards to shoes the safest bet is generally wedges, flats or comfortable heels. Remember that whatever the case maybe, you want to be comfortable. Find shoes that you can move in but also don’t look like they should be warn to the beach and you’ll be fine.
Second, the length of your skirt DOES matter. This is another slippery slope that often can lead to offending someone before you know it. The basic rule is 3 inches above the knee. A skirt this long helps guarantee someone is less likely staring at your legs and more likely your eyes when speaking. The same applies to dresses. Try not to let them be much more than 3 inches above the knee. Also,
ALWAYS DO A BEND CHECK BEFORE PURCHASING!!! If you can not bend over in this dress without your behind being seen you might want to reconsider the purchase.  It is best to leave these things to the imagination.
With our shoe issues sorted out and our skirts or dresses long enough we only have one more area: tops. What should you
notwear: low v-neck tops, anything that looks like a t-shirt, spaghetti strap tops or strapless tops. In the summer time these rules may be harder to abide by with the ever annoy heat. However, what you can do is wear a top with straps at least 2 inches wide accompanied by a light cardigan. If you are dying of heat, take the cardigan off at your desk but make sure to wear it around the office. It is much easy to add the layer and prevent offending someone who thinks you work attire is inappropriate that it is to deal with the aftermath.
As difficult as it may seem, you CAN do this. Despite all the sticky areas, once you learn it all it won’t require more than a thought to get dressed. Even picking out your outfit the night before may help ease the anxiety. Asking a friend can also be a great help because they may catch something you missed. If you don’t own any appropriate clothing it may even be smart to take a friend shopping with you so you don’t get more inappropriate items as well. Just remember to smile and with these tips the last thing you’ll have to worry about is what you are wearing. You’ll be one step closer to wowing the world. Good luck! =)
